Sarah Holmes’ Australian National Series Report

The national series has finally come to an end after thousands of kilometres of travel and great learning experiences. The past four months have had their ups and downs, from mental and physical struggles to strong performances followed by champagne sprays on the podium. Racing takes you to new places, with new trails and challenges whilst meeting like-minded people and making new friends and having a lot of fun along the way. That’s what I love about the world of racing mountain bikes and this series has definitely been one to remember.
Recapping the series, it started in Tassie where I missed 2nd place by ••• of a tyre but was a good way to start the series, possibly as the U23 underdog again. National Champs on my home course was my strongest performance finishing with the silver medal with a lot of local support and a great atmosphere. Shepparton proved to be new, different and challenging and I finished strongly with another 2nd place, kudos to the Melrose trails for preparing me well. Thredbo blessed us with days of solid rain and the mud challenge began, I finished 3rd but was happy with my race considering I haven’t had the chance to make friends with mud yet. Stromlo’s finale was disappointing but overall the series had a lot of highs and fun times.
I am happy with my performances; my results have been consistent and there is definitely a big improvement since last year – not only fitness, but skills and tactics too. I feel that I have learnt a lot, and grown both as a person and as a competitive racer. On the downside, I cant help but feel disappointed with the end to the series – being injured, losing 2nd place overall and being unable to compete at the Oceanic Championships was a blow to what should have been the stronger end of my domestic season. I am now looking forward to getting back on the bike and embarking on more racey journeys throughout the year.

With the 2009/2010 Jayco MTBA Australian MTB series now complete, I would like to thank my sponsors for their fantastic product and support. I cannot express my sincere appreciation enough.
Travelling on the race circuit has its own stresses, so having total faith and confidence in your equipment contributes towards being able to focus purely on performing on race day.
Special thanks to Al, Rich and the Over The Edge Crew in Melrose for believing in me and taking me onboard, without their passion and genuine interest none of this would be possible.
I am in the process of planning my coming months, and am looking forward to continuing to work with you and represent your products as best I can. However, genuine feedback on my performances and representation would be very welcome!
